Lungs
Surgical resection is regarded as the method of choice for the treatment of isolated lung metastases and local primary malignancies of the lung (lung carcinomas).

For many patients, however, resection cannot be carried out due to poor lung function, too high a surgical risk or due to severe other medical conditions. Treatment alternatives for such patients are traditionally radiation and systemic chemotherapy. These two alternatives, however, have the advantage that they also destroy a lot of healthy tissue. For patients with impaired lung function or other serious conditions especially, this can be a major drawback.
Because of these limitations, multiple minimally invasive ablation techniques have evolved over the last two decades.
